Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary Phase 2 PTR Opens This Week

The next major update for WoW Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary Edition is moving to the Public Test Realm. Blizzard confirmed that the Overlords of Outland PTR will become available later this week, giving players their first chance to test Phase 2 content before it launches globally.

Phase 2 brings the next major raid tier to Outland, including Serpentshrine Cavern and Tempest Keep: The Eye. These raids introduce the core Tier 5 raid progression for Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary, with bosses like Lady Vashj, Kael’thas Sunstrider, Void Reaver, The Lurker Below, and more.

Tempest Keep and Serpentshrine Cavern Raid Testing Schedule

Blizzard’s first Phase 2 raid test will focus on both Tier 5 raids:

  • Raid Test Dates: Friday, May 1 through Sunday, May 3
  • Raids Being Tested: Tempest Keep: The Eye and Serpentshrine Cavern
  • PTR Update: Overlords of Outland

This gives players a full weekend to test encounters, compare tuning, practice strategies, and get an early look at how Phase 2 raid progression will feel in the Anniversary version of TBC Classic.

Tier 5 Raids Will Be Tested in a Post-Nerf State

One of the biggest confirmations from Blizzard’s development notes is that The Eye and Serpentshrine Cavern will be tested using post-nerf raid difficulty tuning.

Blizzard explained that after reviewing player progress and completion data from Phase 1 raids, the current post-nerf difficulty has met, and in some ways exceeded, their expectations. As a result, the upcoming Tier 5 PTR raid tests will use similar post-nerf tuning.

For players, this means Serpentshrine Cavern and Tempest Keep are expected to be more accessible from the start compared to their original pre-nerf versions. Guilds should still expect real mechanics, coordination checks, and progression hurdles, but this confirms Blizzard is not aiming for the harshest possible version of Tier 5 at launch.

25-Player Raid Bosses Will Drop More Loot in Phase 2

Blizzard also confirmed a major loot change for Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary. Starting in Phase 2, several 25-player raid bosses will drop increased loot, including one additional Tier token from key bosses.

This change originally arrived later in Burning Crusade Classic, but Blizzard is moving it up for Anniversary realms. That means guilds will gear faster through both Tier 4 and Tier 5 content once Phase 2 begins.

Tier 4 Loot Changes

Gruul’s Lair

  • High King Maulgar will drop 3 Tier 4 shoulder tokens instead of 2.
  • Gruul the Dragonkiller will drop 3 Tier 4 leg tokens instead of 2.

Magtheridon’s Lair

  • Magtheridon will drop 3 Tier 4 chest tokens instead of 2.

Serpentshrine Cavern Loot Changes

  • Lady Vashj will drop 3 Tier 5 head tokens instead of 2.
  • Leotheras the Blind will drop 3 Tier 5 hand tokens instead of 2.
  • Fathom-Lord Karathress will drop 3 Tier 5 leg tokens instead of 2.
  • Hydross the Unstable will drop 3 different epic pieces of gear instead of 2.
  • The Lurker Below will drop 3 different epic pieces of gear instead of 2.
  • Morogrim Tidewalker will drop 3 different epic pieces of gear instead of 2.

Tempest Keep Loot Changes

  • Kael’thas Sunstrider will drop 3 Tier 5 chest tokens instead of 2.
  • Void Reaver will drop 3 Tier 5 shoulder tokens instead of 2.
  • Al’ar will drop 3 different epic pieces of gear instead of 2.
  • High Astromancer Solarian will drop 3 different epic pieces of gear instead of 2.

What This Means for Phase 2 Progression

The combination of post-nerf Tier 5 tuning and increased 25-player raid loot should make Phase 2 progression smoother for a much wider range of guilds. Instead of slower Tier token bottlenecks and more punishing early raid walls, players should see faster gearing and more consistent raid progression across both current and previous raid tiers.

This is especially important for guilds still clearing Gruul’s Lair and Magtheridon’s Lair, since the extra Tier 4 tokens will help more players catch up before stepping into Serpentshrine Cavern and Tempest Keep.

Heroic Dungeon Loot Changes Coming Later

Blizzard also noted that other Phase 3 loot changes affecting Heroic dungeon bosses are planned for Phase 3, rather than being moved into Phase 2.

For now, the big Phase 2 loot updates are focused on 25-player raid bosses, Tier tokens, and additional epic drops from Serpentshrine Cavern and Tempest Keep.

Phase 2 Is Taking Shape

With the PTR opening later this week, raid testing scheduled for May 1–3, post-nerf Tier 5 tuning confirmed, and extra raid loot arriving early, Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary Phase 2 is starting to look much more approachable than some players may have expected.

If you are preparing for Overlords of Outland, now is the time to finish key attunements, clean up Phase 1 raid gear, and get ready for the jump into Serpentshrine Cavern and Tempest Keep.
