Blizzard has announced Chris Metzen is returning to Warcraft as the Executive Creative Director, with more announcements coming at Blizzcon 2023. He was previously serving as an advisor, but is now back full-time.

This announcement came shortly after news of the Hearthstone team reportedly hit with layoffs due to restructuring.
Speculation has already begun on what role Metzen will play. Many theorize a Classic plus could be in development, seeing the success of Classic, Season of Mastery, and Hardcore servers.
My opinion is we will get a Classic plus announcement at Blizzcon 2023, details shared of plans, perhaps not just yet a release date, with Metzen spearheading the project. As for retail WoW, I think Metzen will also have a hand in its’ development and where to take it after Dragonflight.
