Gruul’s Lair Raid Guide TBC Classic (Boss Strategy, Mechanics & Tier 4 Tokens)
Gruul’s Lair is a 25-player raid in The Burning Crusade Classic located in Blade’s Edge Mountains. This raid drops important Tier 4 tokens needed to complete your first raid armor set.
The two bosses, High King Maulgar and Gruul the Dragonkiller, drop Shoulder and Leg tokens used by all classes. Gruul’s Lair is one of the first major progression raids alongside Karazhan and Magtheridon’s Lair.
This guide is intentionally concise and designed for players who want a quick refresher on core mechanics.

High King Maulgar + Friends
Strategy
Kill: Blindeye → Olm → Krosh → Kiggler → High King
Tank 1: Blindeye (Priest) + Olm (Warlock)
Tank 2: High King Maulgar, with your back to a wall
Mage tank: Krosh (Mage)
Boomkin tank: Kiggler (Shaman)
- Tank 1: Grab Blindeye + Olm together, for cleave
- Focus Blindeye, burn his shield, interupt Prayer of Mending
- Warlocks Banish, Fear, and/or Enslave Demon the Felhounds, kill them after Olm dies
- Tank 2: Tank High King Maulgar away from the group
- Mage Tank: Grab Krosh + Spellsteal his Spell Shield
- Range focus here after Olm dies
- Stay 15 yds away to avoid Blast Wave
- Boomkin Tank: Pick up Kiggler (you’re immune to his Hex)
- Ranged focus here after Krosh dies
- Ranged move to High King Maulgar after Kiggler dies
- All on High King Maulgar after Kiggler dies
- 50%: High King will randomly charge raid members + cast Intimidating Roar
- Tank 1 taunt High King when he incapacitates Tank 2 with Intimidating Roar
- 50%: High King will randomly charge raid members + cast Intimidating Roar
Notes
- Hunters use Misdirection to help initial pull
- Tremor Totem, Fear Ward, Berserker Rage to mitigate Intimidating Roar
- Mind-numbing Poison III and Curse of Tongues work on Blindeye. Use your interupts to counter his heals.
- High King Maulgar deals heavy melee damage, and triggers Flurry at 50%
- Keep Demoralizing Shout and Thunderclap up on him


Gruul the Dragonkiller
Strategy
- Gruul gains a 15% damage increase buff (Growth) every 30 sec.
- Offtank must remain 2nd on threat to absorb Hurtful Strikes.
- Healers top off the tank before you get silenced from Reverberation.
- Everyone: avoid AoE damage from Cave in.
- Gruul will cast Ground Slam, causing Gronn Lord’s Grasp.
- Everyone MUST SPREAD OUT after the knockback.
Notes
- Ice Block, Cloak of Shadows, Divine Shield remove the Gronn Lord’s Grasp debuff, but NOT the damage caused by Shatter.
- Mitigate high physical damage from Gruul later in the fight with Ancestral Healing, Inspiration, and Improved Lay on Hands.

Phase 1 raid progression begins in Karazhan, a 10-player raid, and continues into the 25-player raids Gruul’s Lair and Magtheridon’s Lair. These raids drop Tier 4 tokens used to obtain your first raid armor set in TBC Classic.
