WoW Forever: 10 Biggest Features and Surprises From BlizzCon 2026
World of Warcraft: Forever is finally official. After years of players calling for a “Classic Plus” version of World of Warcraft — and months of speculation surrounding the mysterious Project Camelot builds — Blizzard revealed the real project at BlizzCon 2026.
And WoW Forever is much bigger than another seasonal Classic experiment.
Blizzard describes World of Warcraft: Forever as a new permanent World of Warcraft experience built around the original level 1–60 version of Azeroth. Instead of simply progressing into The Burning Crusade again, Forever will continue expanding the original continents with new zones, quests, dungeons, raids, systems, classes and stories.
WoW Forever launches on November 4, 2026, with beta beginning September 17.
Yes, this is essentially the idea players have spent years calling Classic Plus — but Blizzard isn’t treating WoW Forever as a season, an expansion progression server, or even simply another version of WoW Classic. It’s intended to become a permanent third home for World of Warcraft.

1. WoW Forever Is a Permanent, Expanding Level-60 Azeroth
This may be the most important WoW Forever feature of all.
Forever is designed to stay rooted in original Azeroth and the level 1–60 journey. Instead of reaching level 60 and eventually being sent through the Dark Portal into another familiar expansion cycle, Blizzard plans to keep building outward from the original game.
That means new patches can add quests, dungeons, raids, PvP content and entire regions without making everything players previously earned irrelevant simply because another expansion raised the level cap.
Blizzard has been unusually direct about this point: Forever is not intended to be a season. It’s being built as an evergreen version of Azeroth that can continue growing for years.
For me, this is what really separates WoW Forever from Season of Discovery. It’s not just “what if Vanilla had some new abilities and raids?” It’s Blizzard creating an alternate future for the original game.
2. More Than 1,000 New Quests and Major New Regions
Blizzard isn’t just adding a few endgame quest hubs. WoW Forever will introduce more than 1,000 new quests throughout the entire level 1–60 experience.
The new and expanded regions revealed so far include Mount Hyjal, Riverglades, Shen’dralas and Zephras Isle.
Riverglades alone contains more than 150 quests across roughly the level 30–45 experience, while Mount Hyjal explores what happened to the region following Archimonde’s defeat. Shen’dralas expands an unfinished corner of the original world connected to Dire Maul, the Shen’dralar and nearby centaur tribes.
This is exactly the sort of direction many players imagined when talking about Classic Plus: not replacing old Azeroth, but finally opening the roads, gates and unfinished areas that have been sitting there for more than two decades.
3. Nine New Dungeons and New 10- and 20-Player Raids
Forever is also filling original Azeroth with a huge amount of new group content.
Blizzard has announced nine new dungeons:
- Hall of Thanes
- Ruins of Lordaeron
- Whelgar’s Excavation site
- City of Dalaran
- Blackmaw Hold
- The Drowned City
- Krol’dok Stronghold
- Alcaz Prison
- Shaper’s Terrace
We’re also getting raids built for different group sizes. Barrow Deeps is planned as a maximum-level 10-player raid, while Hyjal Summit will be a 20-player raid. The original 40-player raid experience isn’t disappearing either — Onyxia’s Lair is still part of the launch raid progression.
The first raids unlock on December 9.
I particularly like the idea of 10-, 20- and 40-player content coexisting. Forever doesn’t need to force every raid into one standardized group size.
4. The Skyborne Are WoW Forever’s New Playable Race
WoW Forever is introducing an entirely new playable race: the Skyborne.
The interesting part is that the Skyborne aren’t locked to one faction. During character creation, players choose whether their character joins the Horde or Alliance.
Horde Skyborne lean into their elemental traditions and can become Shamans, while Alliance Skyborne pursue their arcane heritage and gain access to Mage. Both sides can also play Warriors, Hunters, Rogues and Druids.
They begin on Zephras Isle in a new level 1–12 starting experience, complete with new racials, customizations, voices, animations and unique Druid forms.
A neutral race isn’t completely new territory for World of Warcraft, but seeing Blizzard introduce one directly into a game so heavily inspired by Vanilla is one of the more surprising decisions.
5. New Race/Class Combinations — Including Undead Paladins
Blizzard is loosening some of Vanilla’s original race/class restrictions without simply letting every race play everything.
Six new combinations were revealed:
- Gnome Priest
- Human Hunter
- Dwarf Shaman
- Orc Mage
- Troll Warlock
- Undead Paladin
Race abilities are being revisited too, with each race receiving two active and two passive abilities designed to make racial identity matter without forcing everyone toward one mathematically superior race.
Undead Paladins may be the biggest conversation starter here — and Blizzard even showed off a unique Forsaken Paladin mount.
6. WoW Forever Won’t Have Traditional Server Realms
This might be the most unexpected technical change Blizzard announced.
World of Warcraft: Forever is going realmless.
Instead of selecting from a long list of individual servers when creating a character, players choose the type of world they want to play in. Blizzard currently describes the choices as Normal, PvP and Roleplaying, with Hardcore becoming available after launch.
Each ruleset acts as a large ecosystem rather than every player existing on one enormous universal server. Horde and Alliance still remain separate, and players from different rulesets can’t simply group with each other.
The goal is to eliminate one of the most stressful parts of a WoW launch: trying to guess which realm your friends will choose, which server will be populated six months later, and which one is going to have a four-hour queue on day one.
There’s another surprising consequence: character names will use a two-part naming system, allowing identities to remain unique across the much larger regional ecosystem.
7. No Flying, No Level Scaling — and No WoW Token or Character Boosts for Now
A lot of WoW Forever’s biggest features are additions. Some of its most important design decisions are things Blizzard is deliberately not adding.
Blizzard has confirmed no flying mounts and no level scaling. Zones still have identities and level ranges, travel still matters, and getting somewhere is intended to remain part of the adventure.
Developers have also said they aren’t introducing the WoW Token or character boosts right now.
That wording is worth emphasizing — it isn’t necessarily a promise that these systems could never appear years from now. But at launch, Blizzard appears committed to the idea that progression comes primarily from actually playing the game.
That philosophy matters. Forever is borrowing a few modern conveniences, but Blizzard clearly doesn’t want to remove the friction that makes original Azeroth feel like a world instead of a lobby.
8. Loot Is Being Designed to Stay Exciting — Including Chase Drops
One of my favorite smaller announcements came from the discussion around itemization.
Blizzard wants Forever to “unsolve” the gear journey. Existing items are being revisited, hundreds of new items are being added, and gear can feature more unusual effects instead of everything collapsing into predictable stat upgrades.
Even more interesting: raid bosses will have rare chase drops — unusually powerful items with lower-than-normal drop rates that give players a reason to keep returning to older bosses.
Think about something like Dragonspine Trophy in The Burning Crusade: the kind of item that remains exciting long after a raid has otherwise been cleared.
For an evergreen game, that’s important. New patches need to add things to do without immediately turning everything that came before them into vendor trash.
9. Legacy Progression and Camping Make Leveling Part of the Endgame
Two of Forever’s brand-new systems reinforce Blizzard’s message that the journey matters as much as the destination.
The Legacy System
Legacy is account-wide progression built around completing challenges while leveling and playing different characters.
Players earn Legacy Points through objectives such as leveling classes or reaching profession milestones. Rather than treating alts as starting over from nothing, Forever is giving repeated 1–60 journeys their own long-term progression.
It takes one of the coolest things Hardcore did for Classic — keeping leveling zones populated — without requiring permanent death.
Camping
Players can also create campsites in the outdoor world. Other adventurers can stop by, contribute through their professions, craft and receive campsite benefits.
It’s a small idea on paper, but one that fits Forever surprisingly well: create more reasons for players to stop, interact and remember the people they meet instead of simply passing through each other.
10. Optional Transmog, HD Graphics, Controller Support, Barbershops and Better Travel
This category may end up being the most controversial — because Forever isn’t afraid to borrow selected conveniences from later versions of WoW.
The key word seems to be choice.
Transmog exists, but it’s opt-in. Players who want to see transmog can enable it, while those who want everyone to appear in the gear they’re actually wearing can leave it disabled.
Forever also allows players to choose between HD and original-style SD character models, while updated environmental rendering adds details such as flowing rivers, fog and improved lighting without completely replacing WoW’s original art direction.
And yes: WoW Forever has official gamepad/controller support.
Barbershops are coming too, and world travel is being expanded with additional routes connecting places such as Stormwind Harbor, Southshore and Steamwheedle.
That’s probably the balancing act Blizzard will be judged on most closely: modernizing the frustrating parts of Vanilla without modernizing away the reasons people still love it.
So, Is WoW Forever Actually Classic Plus?
In practical terms, WoW Forever looks remarkably close to what players have spent years describing as Classic Plus: original Azeroth, a level-60 foundation, unfinished areas brought to life, new quests, new dungeons, new raids and an alternate path forward that doesn’t simply repeat World of Warcraft’s original expansion timeline.
But Blizzard is clearly trying to establish Forever as something larger than a Classic experiment.
This is intended to sit permanently alongside modern World of Warcraft and WoW Classic. Blizzard can continue expanding Azeroth horizontally instead of eventually replacing it with the next expansion.
That is probably the thing that surprised me most.
After years of wondering whether Project Camelot would be a short Classic season, a Season of Discovery successor, or some kind of reset, Blizzard’s answer is much more ambitious: build another World of Warcraft and keep it at level 60.
What Happens After WoW Forever Launches?
The beta begins September 17, followed by the full launch on November 4, 2026. The first raid content unlocks on December 9.
And Blizzard’s roadmap doesn’t stop there. Future updates are already planned to include additional raids, dungeons, quests, PvP updates, world content, profession and Legacy updates, Hardcore, and even a revamped iconic raid.
That’s the part of the word Forever that matters: launch is supposed to be the beginning rather than the finished version of the game.
WoW Forever FAQ
What is World of Warcraft: Forever?
World of Warcraft: Forever is a permanent new version of World of Warcraft set in a reimagined original Azeroth. It keeps the level 1–60 foundation while adding new regions, quests, dungeons, raids, races, class options and systems over time.
Is WoW Forever Classic Plus?
Classic Plus was a community term rather than an official Blizzard product name. WoW Forever follows many of the ideas players associated with Classic Plus, but Blizzard is positioning Forever as its own permanent World of Warcraft experience rather than simply a new Classic season.
When does WoW Forever release?
World of Warcraft: Forever launches globally on November 4, 2026. Beta begins September 17, 2026.
What is the level cap in WoW Forever?
The level cap is 60. Blizzard plans to continue expanding the game with additional level 1–60 content rather than following the traditional expansion model of continually increasing the maximum level.
Will WoW Forever have flying mounts?
No. Blizzard has said WoW Forever will not have flying mounts, keeping world travel and exploration central to the experience.
Does WoW Forever have transmog?
Yes, but transmog is optional. Players can choose whether they want transformed appearances displayed or prefer to see characters wearing the appearance of their actual equipped gear.
Does WoW Forever have traditional servers?
No. Forever uses a realmless system where players select a ruleset such as Normal, PvP or Roleplaying instead of selecting a traditional individual realm. Hardcore will also become available after launch.
WoW Forever is changing far more than I expected from Blizzard’s take on “Classic Plus.” Let me know which announcement you’re most excited — or worried — about.
