Druid and Rogue Steamvault Farming Guide for Mining, Herbalism, and Engineering

The Steamvault is one of the best instanced stealth farms in TBC Classic for Druids and Rogues because of the many resources inside: chests, pickpocketable mobs, mining nodes, herbalism nodes, and a gas cloud for Engineers.

To maximize gathering inside The Steamvault, the strongest profession combination is usually Mining and Engineering. Mining gives consistent ore nodes, while Engineering lets you extract the guaranteed gas cloud in Mekgineer Steamrigger’s room. If you only have Mining, Herbalism, or Engineering, the dungeon can still be a very lucrative stealth farm.

Personally, my Druid is Mining and Herbalism, so I gather both ore and herbs throughout the run. This provides a steady mix of ore, gems, Motes of Earth, Motes of Fire, and Motes of Life from herbs. As such, this guide will focus on how I farm using my Druid.

Recommended Stealth Talents, Gear, and Enchants

Before farming The Steamvault, it helps to improve your stealth as much as possible.

On my Druid, I use a few simple stealth-focused upgrades to make the run safer and smoother:

Useful Items to Bring While Farming Steamvault

Before farming The Steamvault, make sure to clean out your bags so you have as much room as possible. Miners should bring a Mining Pick, and Engineers should bring a Zapthrottle Mote Extractor to extract the gas cloud in the boss room.

If you are not farming on a Druid, bring an Azure Silk Belt. There is some swimming involved between the two main farming areas, and the extra swim speed is helpful for Rogues. Druids already have Aquatic Form, so this is mostly a Rogue quality-of-life item.

Engineers can also bring Rocket Boots Xtreme. They are not required, but they can help speed up movement between cooldowns like Dash and Sprint.

Steamvault Stealth Farming Route

The Steamvault farming route is divided into three main sections:

  1. The first room.
  2. The swim toward Mekgineer Steamrigger.
  3. Mekgineer Steamrigger‘s boss room.

Step 1: Gather What You Can in the First Room

The first room has two guaranteed mining node spawns. However, depending on where the nodes spawn, you may need to skip them. If a node is too close to the Bog Overlords on the left side, its not safe to mine because Bog Overlords can see through stealth. The second Bog Overlord on the right side when you first enter is more forgiving, and you can usually mine near that one safely.

Step 2: Swim Toward Mekgineer Steamrigger

After checking the first room, swim toward Mekgineer Steamrigger. Herbalists can gather Ancient Lichen along the way when it spawns, making this part of the route especially valuable for Herbalists.

Step 3: Harvest the Boss Room

The boss room is the most reliable part of the farm. The two mining nodes in this room can always be mined, giving you at least two guaranteed ore nodes per run. At maximum, a run can have four ore nodes total between the first room and boss room.

Engineering: Steamvault Gas Cloud Farm

Engineers farming The Steamvault should always bring a Zapthrottle Mote Extractor. There is a guaranteed gas cloud each run in the room with Mekgineer Steamrigger.

The gas cloud spawns on the right side of the room and slowly moves around the area. Extracting it usually gives 3-5 Motes of Water, making Engineering one of the best professions to pair with Mining for this farm.

Mining in Steamvault

Miners can expect four guaranteed mining node spawns per Steamvault run. In most runs, this means around two Adamantite nodes and two Fel Iron nodes, though any of these can rarely spawn as Khorium instead.

There are always two mining node spawns in the first room. Depending on the location of the nodes, Bog Overlordscan see through stealth, so avoid forcing a risky node if it will get you caught.

The two mining nodes in Mekgineer Steamrigger’s room can always be mined, making them the core of the route. Even on a bad first-room spawn, you still have two guaranteed mining nodes per reset.

Herbalism in Steamvault

Herbalists farming The Steamvault should gather every herb they can safely reach along the route. I usually skip all of the herbs in the first room. Most of the herbs you find will be Ancient Lichen, but you can also find Felweed, Ragveil, and occasionally Flame Cap.

Herbalism adds extra value to the run because Outland herbs can also provide Motes of Life. If you are already stealthing through the dungeon as a Druid or Rogue, grabbing herbs along the way is an easy way to increase the value of each reset.

Steamvault Farming Reset Spot

Check this brief demonstration I made on how to reset leper gnome mobs in The Steamvault Druid/Rogue farm. I tried going to this spot with the other mobs outside this area – Naga packs – and it did not reset them. Only worked for mobs in the Mekgineer Steamrigger‘s room.

Best Professions for Steamvault Farming

The best profession combination for Steamvault farming is Mining and Engineering. Mining gives you guaranteed ore nodes, while Engineering lets you extract the gas cloud in the boss room for Motes of Water.

Mining and Herbalism is also excellent, especially for Druids. This setup lets you gather ore, herbs, gems, Motes of Earth, Motes of Fire, and Motes of Life in the same run.

  • Mining + Engineering: Best overall value for ore nodes and gas cloud extraction.
  • Mining + Herbalism: Best for Druid gatherers who want ore and herbs in the same run.
  • Herbalism only: Still useful if you are already stealth farming and want Ancient Lichen and Motes of Life.
  • Engineering only: Useful for the guaranteed gas cloud, but weaker without Mining.
